Making Space

As I sat down to write this week's blog post, I found myself facing a blank page and a mind teeming with thoughts yet struggling to find a cohesive theme. It's a predicament many creatives face—those moments when inspiration seems elusive, and the cursor blinks tauntingly on the empty screen. I decided to embrace this uncertainty and share a bit of my journey in choosing my word of the year for 2024: "Making Space". Of course, that’s two words, but hey ho!

Defining "Making Space" in My Life

Choosing a word of the year is a personal and reflective practice. For me, "making space" is about creating room for the things that matter most. It's a commitment to prioritize what brings joy, growth, and fulfilment whilst letting go of the things that are unnecessary and draining.

I have written, or at least alluded to this idea over the last year or so. As I was thinking about my word of the year, this idea of making space kept coming up. Along with other words such as mindful, calm, connected and pilgrimage. Being...but none were quite right. On reflection, I could see that all of these words were the result of making space.

“Find a moment of stillness, give your heart a chance to tell you where you really need to be.” — Dodinsky

Embracing the Ebb and Flow

For me, "making space" is not a rigid command but a gentle invitation to embrace the ebb and flow of life. Over the last year, I have come to realise that sometimes the most profound growth happens in the spaces between plans and expectations. I'm learning to surrender to the process, trusting that in the spaciousness of the unknown, inspiration will find its way to me.

Creating Room for Creativity

I miss being creative, in a tangible way - for me, this means crochet, quilting or writing poetry. These are the things that get squeezed out when life gets too busy. But creativity is more than these activities. In the realm of creativity, making space means allowing ideas to breathe and evolve. It's about fostering an environment that nurtures inspiration rather than forcing it. This year, I commit to carving out intentional creative spaces, free from the constraints of perfectionism, and giving myself the freedom to explore and experiment.

Decluttering the Mind

Making space involves mindfulness, letting go of unnecessary worries, and creating mental landscapes that are conducive to focus and clarity. This year and for 2024 I am exploring meditation, mindfulness practices, and intentional breaks to clear mental clutter and invite in fresh perspectives.

Inviting Growth and Exploration

I believe that making space opens the door to growth and exploration. It means being open to new experiences, learning opportunities, and personal development. This year, I am excited to welcome in new perspectives, skills, and connections, creating a fertile ground for continuous growth.

When you let go of what no longer serves you, you create space for what's meant to be

So, here's to making space—space for creativity, for mindfulness, for growth, and for the beautiful uncertainties that shape our lives. I invite you to join me on this journey of exploration and creation, by choosing your own word (or more) for the year.
