I am courageous (and other positive affirmations)

You know that feeling when you are trying to be brave but it’s not quite working out? Me too. This month we are talking about overcoming fear and I have been thinking about positive affirmations. I have a number of positive affirmation packs of cards that I randomly pull a card from when I am need of a positive thought or five. Saturday morning I reached into my newest pack and pulled this one out:

I am courageous affirmator card

“No one is fearless. No one. But even though I am not fearless, I am courageous.” That will do nicely, for we are all courageous in many ways, whether it’s facing a spider so as not to pass on the fear to your child (be brave mummy, be brave) or facing the future with no idea what might happen but trusting it will all work out in the end takes a certain amount of courage. We all have the capacity to be courageous and we can learn to be more so if we wish.

We need to allow ourselves to be courageous, to break free from our limiting beliefs and to recognise the negative voice in our head and to ignore it or tell it to pipe down in order to move forward and dare I say it, take a risk. Once we can recognise the negative thoughts we can replace them…which is where positive affirmations come into play.

Here are five positive affirmations for when you aren’t feeling very courageous at all:

  1. Great strength lies within me at all times
  2. I act courageously even when I don’t feel courageous
  3. I always act in spite of any fears I may have
  4. I always choose the bolder option
  5. Even though I am not fearless I am courageous

Remember that you are not alone, everyone experiences fear (and sometimes it’s a really good thing and is your body’s way of stopping you doing something dangerous) but the key to being courageous is to recognise when it is holding you back and to do something about it.

“I learned that courage wasn’t the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who doesn’t feel afraid, but he who conquers it.” Nelson Mandela
